The BMC’s guidelines aim to reduce pollution during immersion ceremonies. By banning Plaster of Paris idols and chemical-based decorations, the city hopes to protect aquatic ecosystems. Artificial ponds across Mumbai have been prepared for safe idol immersion, minimising the strain on lakes, rivers, and the Arabian Sea. Households with smaller idols are urged to carry out home immersions, which not only reduce environmental impact but also allow families to perform the ritual in a more intimate setting.
Special bins, known as nirmalya kalash, will be placed at immersion sites to collect floral offerings. These organic materials will be composted and later used in city gardens. Separate collection systems for plastics and other non-biodegradable items will support recycling efforts.
