2000 rupee banknotes were taken out of circulation by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on May 19, 2023, leaving holders over four months to deposit or swap them. The public will have access to the service for depositing or exchanging 2000 rupee bills till September 30, 2023.
According to the RBI’s instructions, anyone can swap 2000-dollar bills at any bank branch without a request paper or ID verification. This includes non-account holders as well.
Bank holidays in September
Up until September 30, 2023, 19 RBI Regional Offices (ROs) with issue departments will still offer the ability to exchange 2000-dollar bills.
People may deposit up to two thousand rupee banknotes at the bank where they have an account, but basic KYC and other cash deposit regulatory requirements will still be in place. The customary ceilings will apply to deposits made into Jan Dhan or Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) accounts.
Banknotes issued in the year 2000 can no longer be deposited or exchanged after May 23, 2023, and September 30, 2023. According to the RBI, within 20 days of the announcement of the withdrawal, 50% of the 2000-rupee notes in circulation had been sent to banks.

Banks in September 2023 will be closed for 16 days due to national and regional holidays. The following bank holidays are scheduled: September 3(Sunday), September 6(Shri Krishna Janmashtami), September 7(Janmashtami and Shri Krishna Ashtami), September 9(Second Saturday), September 10(Second Sunday, September 17(Sunday), September 18(Varsiddhi Vinayak Vrata and Vinayaka Chaturthi), September 19(Ganesh Chaturthi), September 20(Ganesh Chaturthi (2nd day)), September 22(Shree Narayana Guru Samadhi Day), September 23(Fourth Saturday and Maharaja Hari Singh’s birthday), September 24(Sunday), September 25(Shrimant Sankardeva’s birth anniversary), September 27(Milad-e-Sherif), and September 28(Eid-e-Milad or Eid-e-Miladunnabi).
