Parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry are still being lashed by heavy rains. Heavy rain is expected in some isolated areas of Kerala until November 24, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
In Pudhukottai, Thirunelveli, Tenkasi, Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Viruthunagar, and Niligiri districts, all government and private schools are to be closed today due to the forecast of heavy rains.
Schools closed
On November 22, the Kerala state’s Pathanamthitta district was placed under a red alert by the IMD. A Shibu, the Pathanamthitta district collector, issued an order banning nighttime travel between 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. as well as recreational activities like kayaking and boating in the district’s hilly regions until November 24.
The order was issued because there was a chance of intense, ongoing rain, which could cause landslides, mudslides, and localized small floods.
Due to the red alert that has been issued in the district, pilgrims to Sabarimala have been advised to exercise caution and vigilance, especially at night.
Additionally, an orange alert for November 23 was issued for the districts of Thiruvananthapuram and Idukki. Numerous roads and hilly areas in the Thiruvananthapuram district were inundated due to the intense rainfall. Except for Kerala’s Kannur and Kasaragod districts, the IMD also issued a yellow alert in all other districts.
The weather service also forecast that during the next five days, cyclonic circulations over Tamil Nadu may bring moderate to medium-sized rainfall, along with lightning and thunder, to Kerala.
A press release from IMD states that thunderstorms, light to moderate rainfall, and gusty winds are possible today in one or two locations in the state’s districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Wayanad, Kollam, Malappuram, Alappuzha, Thrissur, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Palakkad, Kozhikode, and Kannur. The Karaikal and Puducherry regions also had a lot of rain the day before. In light of the circumstances, the territorial government announced a holiday for schools on Wednesday.
