On January 12, 2024, at 3:30 p.m., Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to launch the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), which will mark the opening of the much-anticipated sea bridge and a significant turning point in India‘s infrastructure development.

When it opens, the bridge—officially designated “Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewari-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu,” but commonly called “Atal Setu”—will rank as the longest sea bridge in India and the twelfth longest globally.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to inaugurate the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) on January 12, celebrating the Jayanti of Jija Mata and Swami Vivekananda.

Originally slated to open on December 25, 2023, the 21.8 km road bridge project is planned to relieve traffic at Mumbai’s current entrance points and guarantee smooth access from the mainland to the new Navi Mumbai airport in Panvel.

It is anticipated that the bridge will shorten the duration of travel between Navi Mumbai and Mumbai by 30 to 45 minutes during peak traffic hours. There are currently only two ways to connect by road between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

An important part of promoting urban and industrial growth is anticipated to be played by the MTHL, which is anticipated to improve communication between Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT). This sea bridge’s opening also serves as evidence of India’s developing infrastructure capabilities.
