Global Cooperation Needed for AI and Data Privacy Standards: PM Modi at IMC 2024

Modi highlighted India’s proactive role in addressing digital security through its Data Protection Act and National Cyber Security Strategy. By bringing this issue to international platforms like the WTSA and during India’s G-20 presidency, he called for collective global responsibility. The Prime Minister stressed that technology, which transcends borders, requires international collaboration to ensure its safe, ethical, and secure use.

In his address, Modi called on the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) to spearhead the initiative, noting the importance of creating guidelines that consider the diversity of nations. He pointed out that the digital tools and platforms available today transcend borders, making global cooperation essential for safeguarding citizens from cyber threats.

India has already taken steps to strengthen its digital security, with initiatives like the Data Protection Act and National Cyber Security Strategy showcasing the country’s commitment. However, Modi argued that these efforts need to extend beyond national boundaries to have a meaningful impact in today’s interconnected world.

Highlighting the issue on an international stage, Modi reiterated that no single nation can address the complex challenges of AI and data privacy alone. He urged global institutions to take responsibility and act swiftly, establishing a common set of principles for managing technology’s rapid advancements.

PM Modi’s call for global standards in AI and data privacy underscores the necessity of international cooperation to manage the complexities of modern technology. The success of such an initiative will rely on unified efforts to create frameworks that prioritize security, ethics, and inclusivity.

“Just as we have created a framework of global rules and regulations for the aviation sector, the digital world also needs a similar framework.” – PM Narendra Modi
