Typhoon Shanshan Batters Southern Japan: Lives Lost, Damage Widespread

  • Typhoon Shanshan caused heavy rainfall and powerful winds across Kyushu, Japan.
  • Over 40 buildings were damaged, and three people were killed due to a landslide.
  • Nearly a quarter million households experienced power outages, mostly in Kagoshima prefecture.

Typhoon Shanshan made landfall in southern Japan, unleashing heavy rain and strong winds, particularly in Kyushu.

Miyazaki prefecture recorded nearly 60 centimeters of rainfall, surpassing the average for the entire month of August, causing rivers to swell and threatening widespread flooding.

Typhoon Shanshan Leaves Trail of Destruction Across Japan’s Southern Islands

In the midst of the chaos, a landslide in the central city of Gamagori claimed the lives of three people, while dozens were injured across the affected regions. Power outages hit nearly a quarter of a million households, with the Kagoshima area being the hardest hit. As the typhoon continues its slow northward crawl, authorities remain on high alert for further damage and flooding.

The impact of the typhoon extended beyond Miyazaki, with nearby prefectures like Kumamoto and Kagoshima also experiencing significant damage. Many residents were injured in their efforts to seek shelter, with the total number of injured surpassing fifty. The Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported that a quarter of a million homes lost power, particularly in Kagoshima.

Tragically, the typhoon’s arrival was preceded by a deadly landslide in Gamagori, central Japan, which buried a house and killed three people. As the storm moved northward, its winds weakened slightly but continued to pose a threat, particularly to southern prefectures.

Efforts to restore power and assist those affected by the storm are ongoing as authorities brace for continued rain and potential landslides. The damage assessment is still underway, with early reports indicating that the destruction is extensive across Kyushu and surrounding regions. Emergency services are on high alert, focusing on preventing further loss of life and property damage.

As Typhoon Shanshan slowly continues its path through Japan, the focus remains on mitigating further damage and ensuring the safety of residents. The country is rallying to support the affected areas, even as the threat of additional flooding and landslides persists.

“The storm’s devastation is a stark reminder of nature’s unpredictability, as communities across southern Japan grapple with the aftermath of Typhoon Shanshan.”
