Major Crackdown on Illegal Fishing: Four Indonesian Vessels Intercepted by Australian Authorities

  • Four Indonesian fishing vessels were intercepted by Australian Defence and Border Force near Augustus Island.
  • Authorities seized over 700 kg of sea cucumber, 2,350 kg of salt, and other illegal catches; three vessels were destroyed at sea.
  • The operation is part of Operation Leedstrum, which enhances patrols and enforcement in response to rising illegal fishing activity.

On August 6, 2024, Australian maritime forces intercepted four Indonesian fishing vessels operating illegally near Augustus Island.

The interception, coordinated by the Australian Defence Vessel (ADV) and Maritime Border Command (MBC), led to the seizure of significant quantities of illegal catch and fishing equipment.

Australian Forces Disrupt Illegal Fishing Operations: Four Indonesian Vessels Destroyed

Following the interception, three of the four vessels were destroyed at sea on August 8, 2024, to prevent further illegal activities. The fourth vessel was escorted outside the Australian fishing zone with 13 of the crew members on board. The remaining 20 crew members are now under investigation on the Australian mainland for violations of the Fisheries Management Act 1991.

Operation Leedstrum, established in late 2023, has significantly enhanced Australia’s ability to tackle illegal fishing. The initiative has led to increased patrols, more staff, and additional surveillance tools, which have proven effective in responding to illegal activities promptly.

This crackdown underscores Australia’s unwavering stance on maritime security and environmental protection. By enforcing strict measures and pursuing legal action, Australia aims to deter future violations and safeguard its marine resources.

Australia’s proactive measures in intercepting and addressing illegal fishing demonstrate its commitment to maritime security and environmental stewardship. Through enhanced operations and community involvement, the nation continues to protect its valuable marine resources from exploitation.

“Our message is simple and unequivocal – those looking to exploit Australia’s sovereign waters will be detected and intercepted. You will lose your catch, your equipment, and possibly your vessel,”
