At Spanish Beach, a Blue Shark Attacks a Swimmer

  • A shark attacked a guy on August 17 while swimming at Rabdells Beach.
  • A blue shark attacked him in a matter of seconds, biting into his foot with its fangs.
  • Due to the blue shark’s presence in the ocean, the Oliva Town Council immediately closed the beaches.

The horrific moment a shark attacked a guy on a Spanish beach has been described by the victim, according to the Independent.

The man was attacked by a blue shark on August 17 while swimming at Rabdells Beach in the Oliva municipality, south of Valencia on the eastern coast of the Spanish mainland. A shadowy figure caught his attention while he was taking a dip on Oliva’s Aigua Blanca beach.

A Blue Shark Attack

A blue shark attacked him in a matter of seconds, biting into his foot with its fangs. Local media reported that the man was attacked by a shark near Rabdells Beach, which caused the sea to “turn red” when the shark bit into his foot.

I didn’t have time to get terrified,” he told a local news source, Las Provincias. I went into the sea when I realized blood was gushing out of me to avoid alarming anyone. Before attacking the man’s foot, the shark was said to have become “disoriented” while navigating the coastal area.

The Majorca Daily Bulletin quoted marine biologist Jaime Penades as saying, “These species don’t want anything from us, they are looking for fish, not people.” Since 2016, there have been no shark attacks in Valencia; the last attack was in 1993.

The swimmer eventually managed to exit the water, and he immediately ran to the medical staff for assistance. Due to the seriousness of the injuries, medical professionals then recommended the man be treated and given a tetanus shot at the Oliva Health Centre.

Due to the blue shark’s presence in the ocean, the Oliva Town Council immediately closed the beaches at Rabdells, Aigua Blanca, and Aigua Mota as a precaution.

The following day, however, they were reopened once the Guardia Civil was confident that there was no longer a threat from any animal in the water. Notably, there have been multiple reports of the species in Spain over the summer, which has caused concern among swimmers.
