Vietnam bans a new Barbie film starring Margot Robbie

Due to a sequence containing a map depicting China’s claimed territory in the South China Sea, the American film “Barbie,” which was scheduled to premiere in Vietnam on July 21, has been prohibited from local distribution.

Chinese maps depict China’s claims over the region, including regions Vietnam believes to be part of its continental shelf and oil concessions, as a U-shaped “nine-dash line” The movie has an offensive image, according to the Department of Cinema, which licenses and censors international films.

A New Barbie Film

The movie Barbie is not the first to be prohibited in the nation. The Vietnamese authorities also withdrew the 2019 release of the DreamWorks animated movie Abominable, and in 2022 they outlawed the action blockbuster Uncharted from Sony for the same reason.

Pine Gap was also taken off Netflix in Vietnam in 2021 as a result of a complaint by the nation’s broadcast authorities. IMDB lists numerous other programs and films that are prohibited in the nation, including Family Guy, The Hunger Games, Full Metal Jacket, and Platoon.

Vietnam and China have long had conflicting territorial claims to a section of the South China Sea that may be rich in energy resources. The nation of Southeast Asia has often charged Chinese ships with infringing upon its sovereignty.

The main actors in the brand-new movie about the renowned doll are Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Greta Gerwig is directing, and it will hit UK theatres on July 21.

The movie is rated PG and runs slightly under two hours. Uncertainty surrounds the scene that sparked the ban in Vietnam. However, the movie’s promos imply that viewers may anticipate music and a lot of pinks.
