  • Ranjit’s and his courageous daughter’s story is one of incredible fortitude and defiance.

Nisha Pahuja, an Indo-Canadian filmmaker, has made the Oscars 2024 shortlist for Documentary Feature Film.

At this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the documentary, which is entirely set in India, took home the Amplify Voices Award for Best Canadian Feature Film.

2024 Oscars

It was one of the few documentaries to be released in theaters in North America this year. A family in Jharkhand, India, is followed throughout the film as they endure a difficult journey to seek justice for a teenage girl who was sexually assaulted.

Bollywood actress Mindy Kaling, British Indian actor Dev Patel, and Indo-Canadian poet Rupi Kaur all backed the movie, which took home the Amplify Voices Award for Best Canadian Feature Film.

An extraordinary family with nothing to hide or be embarrassed of was depicted in the movie along with their unwavering love and strength.

As a result of so many voices calling for Ranjit’s daughter to step down, TIFF observed that the film addresses issues of rape culture and women’s silence more broadly. Ranjit’s and his courageous daughter’s story is one of incredible fortitude and defiance.
