Suicide is suspected in the death of actor Lee Sun-Kyun

Best renowned for his part in the Oscar-winning movie “Parasite,” Lee Sun-kyun was discovered dead in central Seoul, appearing to have committed suicide.

Police were investigating Lee Sun-kyun, 48 years old, for potential usage of marijuana and other psychoactive substances. Amidst a government crackdown, the actor had been questioned by police three times on allegations of using illegal drugs.

The report of Lee’s disappearance prompted a search, which led to his discovery. The harsh drug laws in South Korea include a maximum term of six months in jail or fourteen years in prison for repeat offenders and traffickers.

In 2020, the Bong Joon-ho-directed movie emerged victorious from six Oscar nominations, taking home four awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film.

The Screen Actors Guild awarded Lee and the “Parasite” ensemble the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Motion Picture award.

Lee, who was born in 1975, portrayed prominent roles in South Korean movies like “All About My Wife” (2014) and the suspenseful “Helpless” (2012). In 2021, he starred in the lead role of Apple TV‘s inaugural Korean-language original series. Lee is married to Jeon Hye-jin, an award-winning actress, and the two of them have two kids.
