  • Henley Passport Index is based on data from the International Air Transport Association.

The UAE has made a remarkable leap in the global passport rankings, securing the 9th position in the latest Henley Passport Index. This prestigious index evaluates passports based on the number of destinations their holders can visit without needing a visa.

With visa-free access to 185 countries and territories, the UAE passport has climbed an impressive 53 places since 2006, highlighting the country’s efforts to enhance its global connectivity.

UAE’s Meteoric Rise in Global Passport Power

Dr. Juerg Steffen, CEO of Henley & Partners, attributes this meteoric rise to the UAE government’s strategic initiatives aimed at positioning the country as a global hub for business, tourism, and investment. He notes that higher visa-free scores are strongly correlated with economic prosperity, as countries with more accessible passports tend to enjoy higher GDP per capita, increased foreign direct investment, and stronger international trade relationships.

The Henley Passport Index, recognized for its comprehensive and authoritative ranking system, relies on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Henley & Partners’ research. This data-driven approach ensures accuracy and credibility, making it a valuable resource for evaluating the global mobility afforded by different passports.

Dr. Juerg Steffen, CEO of Henley & Partners, emphasized that the UAE’s rise is no coincidence but the result of deliberate governmental efforts to establish the country as a global business and tourism hub. These efforts have not only improved the UAE’s ranking but also boosted its economic prospects.

The UAE’s enhanced global mobility is expected to have far-reaching impacts on its economy and international relations. As more destinations open up to UAE passport holders, opportunities for business, tourism, and cultural exchange are set to expand. This increased connectivity aligns with the UAE’s vision of becoming a leading global player in various sectors, reinforcing its status on the world stage.

The UAE’s rise in the Henley Passport Index highlights its successful efforts to enhance global mobility and economic prosperity, positioning the country as a key player in international business and tourism.

“The UAE’s meteoric ascent is the result of deliberate and concerted efforts by the Emirati government to position the UAE as a global hub for business, tourism, and investment.” – Dr. Juerg Steffen
