Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police announced a significant 90% reduction in road fatalities and traffic accidents between 2007 and 2024.

Lieutenant General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri highlighted the importance of awareness in achieving this success. Through eight major safety campaigns and the production of 24 impactful videos, authorities engaged over 255,000 people directly.

Inside Dubai’s Road Safety Revolution: 2007 to 2024

Dubai’s transformation in road safety didn’t happen overnight—it was driven by consistent collaboration. Agencies like RTA and Dubai Police worked closely together. The Traffic Safety Strategy emphasized data-driven planning, upgraded road infrastructure, and integration of smart traffic systems. This enhanced real-time management and safety.

Enforcement played a crucial role in behavior change. Police recorded over 145,000 violations from motorcycle delivery riders, 40,000 involving bicycles and e-bikes, and around 60,000 pedestrian infractions. These actions were matched by tough penalties, including the impoundment of tens of thousands of vehicles and personal mobility devices.

The public education approach was widespread and media-savvy. From short-form videos to large-scale campaigns, Dubai strategically reached varied demographics. They communicated messages on the dangers of reckless driving, pedestrian negligence, and speeding. The viral nature of the content shows how technology supported behavior shifts.

The statistics are telling—fatalities per 10,000 vehicles plummeted from 4.2 to just 0.45. Combined fatal and severe injury rates dropped by almost 90%. These numbers are not just figures—they represent lives saved. As a result, the city is becoming significantly safer over time.

Dubai’s road safety transformation is a global case study in how data, enforcement, and education—when combined—can lead to life-saving outcomes. It demonstrates sustainable urban safety.
