The WHO has stated that there are no signs of unusual outbreaks globally, reducing concerns of widespread transmission. Experts highlighted that HMPV differs significantly from COVID-19 due to its long history of circulation in humans, with most children infected by the age of five.
HMPV Infections Decline in China, WHO Dismisses Global Concerns
HMPV, a common winter virus, has been monitored closely in China amid concerns about overcrowded hospitals in northern provinces. Recent data from the Chinese CDC indicates that the virus is on the decline, especially among children under 14. This aligns with expert predictions that respiratory illnesses this winter would not reach the severity of previous seasons.
Despite initial fears, the World Health Organization confirmed no abnormal patterns in HMPV infections globally. The virus, discovered in 2001, is not new and has been part of human respiratory infection cycles for over 60 years. Unlike COVID-19, HMPV benefits from widespread community immunity.
While symptoms such as fever, nasal congestion, and cough are common, the virus is self-limiting in most cases. However, it can lead to severe complications like bronchitis and pneumonia in vulnerable populations, including young children and the elderly. Public health authorities continue to monitor its spread while reassuring the public of its manageable nature.
In the UK, HMPV positivity rates rose slightly at the start of January, but experts emphasized that this trend is within expected seasonal norms. The focus remains on strengthening immunity and offering targeted support to high-risk groups to mitigate severe outcomes.
The decline in HMPV cases and the absence of unusual outbreaks globally underscore the virus’s manageable impact. Vigilance remains key for protecting vulnerable populations.
“Most symptoms will disappear by themselves. Severe cases are relatively low,” said Wang Liping, Chinese CDC.
