China Surpasses Japan to Become the Top Exporter of Automobiles

China shipped 1.07 million automobiles during that time, up 58% from the first quarter of 2022, according to official figures released last week. Likewise, Japan’s exports of vehicles increased marginally by 6% from a year ago, reaching 954,185 units.

Electric car demand and shipments to Russia helped China’s exports grow. The world‘s second-largest exporter of automobiles was China last year, surpassing Germany.

The Top Automobiles Exporter

3.2 million vehicles were shipped from China in 2022, compared to 2.6 million from Germany, according to the General Administration of Customs in China. The decline in the use of fossil fuels has contributed to China’s motor industry’s growth.

Exports of new energy vehicles (NEVs), which include electric vehicles, increased significantly in the first quarter compared to the same period last year by more than 90%.

  • China and Japan’s exports of vehicles increased.
  • China’s motor industry grows due to a decline in fossil fuel use.
  • Tesla plans to increase capacity and export sport utility vehicles to Canada.

One of China’s main NEV exporters is Tesla’s China subsidiary, along with SAIC, which owns the MG brand, and BYD, which has Warren Buffett’s support. A sizable manufacturing facility for Elon Musk‘s electric car company is located in Shanghai, and it sells its products in places like Japan and Europe.

1.25 million vehicles can currently be produced annually at Tesla’s “Gigafactory,” and the company intends to raise capacity even more. Sport utility vehicle production for export to Canada began last month.

Since the start of the conflict in Ukraine, China has also experienced an increase in exports to Russia as Western nations put trade restrictions on Moscow.

Chinese automakers Geely, Chery, and Great Wall saw an increase in their market share in Russia last year when competitors Volkswagen and Toyota left the country as a result of the invasion of Ukraine.
