Tata Motors Breaks Ground with Hydrogen Truck Pilot in India
Tata Motors is embarking on a pioneering journey with the rollout of India’s first hydrogen-powered trucks, in collaboration with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC). This project is part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission and will focus on exploring the feasibility of hydrogen fuel in the transport sector. The pilot program will run for 12-18 months across prominent routes like Jamshedpur-Kalinganagar, Mumbai-Ahmedabad, and Mumbai-Pune.
The fleet of trucks will utilize hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2ICE), an eco-friendly alternative to conventional fuels. IOC will play a crucial role in setting up the refueling infrastructure required to make hydrogen-powered trucking a viable option in India. Tata Motors aims to collect data to assess hydrogen’s commercial potential for long-distance hauls and refueling station logistics.
At the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, Tata Motors also revealed the Tata Prima H.28, India’s first commercial vehicle with a hydrogen engine, boasting a 550-kilometer range. This hydrogen-powered vehicle is a key milestone in Tata’s push towards sustainable transportation, with hydrogen seen as a future alternative to traditional fuels like diesel and CNG.
Despite recent challenges in the commercial vehicle market, Tata Motors remains optimistic about recovery. With sales expected to bounce back in FY26, Tata Motors sees the ongoing hydrogen pilot as a critical step in securing a greener future for India’s transport industry.
Tata Motors’ hydrogen-powered trucks are setting the stage for a sustainable future in India’s transportation sector, with the pilot program providing valuable insights for the adoption of green fuel.
“This is also an experiment in hydrogen refuelling infrastructure, as well as the product… so that hydrogen can be considered for mainstream use in long-distance trucking.” – Girish Wagh, Tata Motors Executive Director
