To help avoid a blood shortage during the holiday season, the Australian Red Cross is pleading with West Australians to get in the giving spirit and donate blood.
Between December 22 and January 2, an additional 830 donations a day are required nationwide to meet hospital demand for patients; in Washington, at least 1000 donations are required during this time.
Blood donations
Blood donations are essential for Australian cancer patients, trauma survivors, infants, and new mothers. This Christmas and New Year, Cath Stone, the executive director of Lifeblood Donor Experience, asked the community to make blood or plasma donations a priority.
Eighty percent of blood products are transported to big city hospitals due to the extraordinary demand this year across the nation. A limited-edition “Australiana” Christmas-inspired bandage created by Melbourne-based artist Madeleine Stamer will be given to contributors as a thank-you in December.
Even Christmas Day will see certain metro donation centers operating. Call 13 14 95, go to lifeblood.com.au, or download the Donate Blood app to find out operating hours and give the gift of life.
