“AI” is declared the winner by Collins Dictionary for 2023

  • Collins Dictionary has declared AI to be the Word of the Year for 2023.
  • Collins named “Permacrisis” the Word of the Year in 2022.
  • “Lockdown” coming in first in 2020.

Collins Dictionary has named “AI,” which stands for artificial intelligence, the Word of the Year for 2023, according to an AFP report. Lexicographers at Collins Dictionary chose after noticing a sharp rise in the term’s usage, which made it the year’s most talked-about topic.

The managing director of Collins, Alex Beecroft, emphasized the substantial expansion of AI’s impact in 2023, claiming that it has become as pervasive and integrated into our lives as email and streaming, making it a significant focus this year.

To select words, the Collins Dictionary examined the Collins Corpus, a database containing more than 20 billion words from a variety of media, including written texts, radio, television, and casual discussions.

It will be a topic of discussion in 2023 because the Corpus constantly monitors the appearance of new words and meanings. The intriguing word usage that Beecroft observed while using the Corpus was noted.

The 2023 edition of the Collins Dictionary features several noteworthy terms, such as “AI,” “Nepo baby,” “Greedflation,” “Ulez,” “social media terms,” “Bazball,” and “Permacrisis.”

The list contains phrases like “Bazball,” “Ulez,” “social media terms,” “nepo baby,” “Greedflation,” and “Permacrisis.” Terms like “deinfluencing” and “Bazball,” which advise followers to stay away from particular commercial products, are also included in the list.

Collins named “Permacrisis” the Word of the Year in 2022, with “lockdown” coming in first in 2020 and “Brexit” in 2016.
