  • Chinese police have saved over 1,000 cats from being killed and sold as pork or mutton.
  • Zhangjiagang police in the east stopped the truck that was transporting the cats.
  • On October 12, after the cats were loaded onto a truck, they halted the car and dialed 911.

A report from state-affiliated media states that Chinese police have saved over 1,000 cats from being killed and sold as pork or mutton.

Based on information provided by animal rights activists, Zhangjiagang police in the east stopped the truck that was transporting the cats.

Cat meat trade

According to a report in The Paper, there is a criminal market for cat meat, raising new questions about food safety. The cats were transported to the southern region of the nation after being saved from a shelter and were cooked into sausages and skewers with pork and lamb.

The cats’ current situation is unknown, although activists assert that a single cat can give birth to four or five kittens.

The Paper reports that activists in Zhangjiagang observed and kept an eye on a large number of cats kept in nailed-up wooden boxes in a cemetery for six days. On October 12, after the cats were loaded onto a truck, they halted the car and dialed 911.

On China’s social media site Weibo, the story from The Paper that was published last Friday sparked thousands of irate comments. More stringent oversight of the food industry was demanded by some users.

One person on Weibo remarked, “May these people die a horrible death.” “When will there be laws to protect animals?” asked another person. Are the lives of dogs and cats not important?

After discovering a rat’s head in his barbecued meat, a student in Jiangsu province ate the meat outside, causing a commotion. Officials at the school first attempted to deny that the food was duck flesh before acknowledging that the student was correct.
