Over 240 Lives Lost in Air India Flight AI171 Crash

  • Air India Boeing 787 crashes shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, leaving 241 dead.
  • Only known survivor, a British national, escaped near the emergency exit.
  • Investigators focus on potential engine thrust loss as the cause.

In one of the deadliest air disasters in India’s recent history, Air India Flight AI171 crashed into a residential area of Ahmedabad just seconds after takeoff. The Boeing 787-8 was en route to London with 242 people on board when it reached just 625 feet in altitude before losing contact with air traffic control.

Investigators are zeroing in on a possible engine thrust failure as a contributing factor. The aircraft sent out a Mayday call but never responded to follow-up communication.

Engine Failure Suspected in Ahmedabad Air India Crash That Killed 241

The crash has shocked the nation, especially as it involved a modern Boeing 787 Dreamliner, typically known for its safety and reliability. Initial reports suggest the aircraft crashed just 50 seconds into flight, with no major weather disruptions, raising questions about a technical malfunction.

Eyewitnesses described a loud explosion and saw flames erupting as the plane struck buildings in the Meghaninagar area. Rescue operations were severely hampered due to the densely populated neighborhood and intense fire that followed the impact.

Survivor Ramesh Viswashkumar’s account adds a chilling human dimension to the tragedy. He recounted waking up surrounded by debris and bodies, limping away from the wreckage before being taken to the hospital. His miraculous escape may provide crucial insights into the moments before the aircraft broke apart.

Aviation experts and Boeing representatives have joined Indian authorities in the investigation. This crash has brought attention to fleet management, pilot training, and emergency preparedness within Indian commercial aviation—a sector already under global scrutiny after previous incidents.

This catastrophic incident not only marks a national tragedy but also underscores the urgent need for comprehensive safety reforms in India’s aviation sector.

“It takes something tragic to shake the system into reform.”
This quote captures the aftermath of the crash, which may drive long-overdue improvements in aviation safety and accountability.
