Punjabi farmers have converged to participate in the “Kisan Mazdoor Mahapanchayat,” an occasion hosted by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), in Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan.
With the restrictions that there cannot be more than 5,000 attendees, tractor trolleys, or a march at Ramlila Maidan, the Delhi Police has granted permission for the event. The SKM anticipates that more than 30,000 farmers from Punjab will arrive in the nation’s capital.
Farmers Protest
The “mahapanchayat” is taking place concurrently with sit-ins being held by other farmer unions at Shambhu and Khanauri on the Punjab-Haryana border, namely the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha and SKM (Non-Political).
Farmers have been calling for legislation to guarantee the legal validity of MSP for their crops, the adoption of the MSP proposals made by the Swaminathan Commission, pensions for farmers and agricultural workers, and the cancellation of farm debt.
Support has been offered by the SKM to the splinter factions at both locations. To step up their opposition to the “pro-corporate, communal, dictatorial policies of the Modi government, to fight to save farming, food security, livelihood, and the people from corporate loot,” farmers will adopt a “Sankalp Patra,” or “letter of resolution,” during the Mahapanchayat.
The mahapanchayat caused traffic jams in central Delhi, and the traffic police in Delhi have released commuter traffic advice. General secretary of the Congress, Jairam Ramesh, claims that without attending to the concerns of the farmers, the Center has let them convene a Mahapanchayat at Ramlila Maidan.
