France Funds Morocco’s High-Speed Rail Expansion

  • France grants €780 million loan to Morocco for 18 Alstom high-speed trains.
  • The extension to Marrakech supports Morocco’s 2030 World Cup preparations.
  • Alstom will manufacture the Avelia Horizon trains, boosting local rail expertise.

France’s financial backing of Morocco’s high-speed rail project marks a significant step in enhancing regional connectivity. The €780 million loan will fund 18 Alstom-built Avelia Horizon trains, designed to accommodate up to 640 passengers and reach speeds of 320 km/h.

Beyond transportation, this investment strengthens Franco-Moroccan economic and diplomatic ties. Alstom’s involvement extends to its Fez factory, which will produce electrical components, contributing to Morocco’s growing rail industry.

Morocco’s High-Speed Rail Network Expands with French Support

France’s commitment to Morocco’s rail expansion highlights a long-standing partnership. With Alstom’s expertise and the Moroccan government’s ambition, the Marrakech high-speed line is poised to revolutionize travel in the country. The project not only enhances domestic mobility but also bolsters Morocco’s tourism industry by making travel to Marrakech faster and more efficient.

This expansion is part of Morocco’s broader modernization efforts. By integrating high-speed rail with existing transport networks, the country is improving its logistics capabilities. The project also aligns with Morocco’s sustainability goals, offering an energy-efficient alternative to road travel.

Diplomatic relations between France and Morocco have seen a recent boost, especially after France recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces. This rail deal reinforces the economic cooperation between the two nations, signaling further investments in infrastructure and technology.

The collaboration extends beyond France, as Morocco’s railway operator ONCF continues partnerships with other companies, such as Hyundai Rotem. These agreements showcase Morocco’s strategic approach to leveraging global expertise while strengthening its domestic rail ecosystem.

Morocco’s high-speed rail expansion, backed by France, represents a forward-thinking investment in infrastructure, connectivity, and diplomacy. As Morocco prepares for the 2030 World Cup, this project cements its role as a leader in modern transport within Africa.
