FDA Issues Class I Recall for Lay’s Classic Chips Over Undeclared Milk

  • The FDA upgraded Lay’s Classic Potato Chips recall to Class I, the highest risk level.
  • Over 6,300 bags sold in Washington and Oregon may contain undeclared milk.
  • Frito-Lay has removed the affected products from the market but warns of severe allergic reactions.

Frito-Lay’s recall of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips initially started in December 2024 when a consumer complaint alerted the company about the presence of undeclared milk.

The affected 13-ounce bags were distributed in Washington and Oregon starting November 3, 2024. While Frito-Lay has confirmed the products are no longer on shelves, individuals who may have purchased them should check packaging details and avoid consumption if allergic.

Severe Allergy Risk Prompts Urgent Recall of Lay’s Classic Chips

The FDA’s Class I classification indicates a high likelihood of severe health risks, including anaphylaxis, for consumers with milk allergies. This level of recall is only issued when there is a reasonable probability of serious harm or death from product consumption.

Frito-Lay emphasized that the recall was conducted in full cooperation with the FDA. Although limited to two states, the potential health risks are significant enough to warrant widespread awareness. Consumers should discard the affected bags or contact the company for a refund.

This incident raises concerns about food safety protocols, as the issue was first flagged by a consumer rather than internal quality control. Undeclared allergens in processed foods continue to be a major concern, prompting calls for stricter oversight and testing.

While no severe reactions have been publicly reported, the recall highlights the importance of clear labeling and transparency in food manufacturing. People with allergies rely on accurate ingredient information to avoid dangerous exposure.

This recall serves as a stark reminder of the critical role food manufacturers play in ensuring product safety. Strict quality checks and immediate action on consumer complaints can prevent health risks and maintain public trust.

“The first wealth is health.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson. This recall underscores the importance of vigilance in food safety to protect consumers’ well-being.
