HMPV in India: Rising Respiratory Infections and Precautions

  • Over 200 HMPV cases were reported in India till December 2024, with no unusual surge observed.
  • Vulnerable groups include children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.
  • Preventive measures like hygiene, social distancing, and staying indoors if sick are crucial.

The Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has resurfaced in India with nine confirmed cases in January 2025, following over 200 cases reported last year. While cases span states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Karnataka, health officials assure that this is a common seasonal virus, first identified in 2001.

Symptoms of HMPV range from mild colds to severe conditions like pneumonia and bronchiolitis, primarily impacting vulnerable populations, including the elderly and children.

Understanding HMPV: Seasonal Virus and Public Health Response

Globally, HMPV has been likened to the common cold due to its winter and spring circulation. WHO highlights its familiarity, stressing that no drastic surge has occurred. In India, proactive surveillance and hygiene protocols remain key in managing the situation. The government has issued advisories emphasizing cleanliness, respiratory etiquette, and avoidance of crowded spaces to curb transmission.

The virus is highly contagious, spreading via droplets, aerosols, and contaminated surfaces. Vulnerable groups, such as children, pregnant women, and those with weakened immunity, are at a higher risk. While severe cases can lead to bronchiolitis or pneumonia, most infections remain mild and self-limiting.

Globally, HMPV peaks in colder months, with China‘s CDC detecting it year-round. Health experts, including WHO, emphasize that it is not a new health threat but requires preventive efforts like other respiratory viruses. India’s surveillance programs align with global best practices to manage and contain the spread.

Preventing HMPV involves simple yet effective measures such as frequent handwashing, wearing masks in crowded spaces, and maintaining overall hygiene. Public health authorities recommend staying home when unwell and practicing respiratory etiquette to reduce transmission rates. Building awareness remains central to mitigating panic and ensuring informed public response.

HMPV, while a seasonal virus, underscores the importance of vigilant public health measures and personal hygiene to protect vulnerable populations and curb infections.
