United Airlines Expands Premium Wine Options to Economy Class

  • United Airlines introduces premium canned wines for purchase in Economy Class starting October 1.
  • Economy passengers can buy rosé, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and sparkling Brut for $12 per can.
  • The switch to canned wines reduces plastic waste, cutting down 4.7 million single-use plastic bottles yearly.

United Airlines is enhancing its in-flight experience by extending premium California-made canned wines to Economy Class passengers.

Previously available only to Business Class travelers, Economy passengers can now enjoy Just Enough Wines’ rosé, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Maker’s sparkling Brut.

United Airlines Launches Premium Canned Wines for Economy Passengers

In addition to offering a premium drink experience, the airline is taking significant steps to reduce its environmental footprint. By switching to canned wines, United is estimated to eliminate 4.7 million single-use plastic bottles annually. This change is part of a broader industry trend, with other airlines, like Virgin Atlantic and La Compagnie, making strides in offering sustainable, premium wine selections.

The female-owned wine brands are based in California’s Central Coast, with Just Enough Wines founded in 2020 by Jessica Hershfield and Kaitlyn Lo, and Maker established by Sarah Hoffman, Kendra Kawala, and Zoe Victor. This expansion signifies United’s effort to support women entrepreneurs while delivering a premium experience to more passengers across all classes.

United Airlines emphasizes sustainability through this offering, as switching to canned wines eliminates a large number of single-use plastic bottles. The airline estimates a reduction of 4.7 million plastic bottles annually, aligning with its broader environmental goals and efforts to reduce waste on board.

As airlines globally focus on upgrading their wine lists, United’s introduction of premium canned wines reflects a growing trend. Virgin Atlantic, for instance, partners with Sea Change for eco-friendly wines, and French boutique airline La Compagnie exclusively serves organic wines, showing that sustainability and quality can go hand in hand in aviation.

United Airlines’ decision to extend premium canned wines to Economy passengers not only enhances the travel experience but also aligns with global efforts toward sustainability in the airline industry.

“After the overwhelmingly positive response to the addition of rosé in United Polaris business class… we’re thrilled to now offer rosé and a higher quality brut bubbles option for our economy passengers…” – Aaron McMillan, United Airlines
