Indian Wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s Olympic Disqualification Upheld by CAS

Vinesh Phogat’s quest for a medal at the Paris Olympics has ended in disappointment after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) dismissed her appeal. The disqualification came after Phogat was found 100 grams overweight, despite her strenuous efforts to meet the weight requirements. She was set to compete in the final against Sarah Hildebrandt, who ultimately won the gold medal.

Phogat’s coach, Virendra Dahiya, expressed frustration with the verdict, arguing that Phogat deserved at least a silver medal based on her performance leading up to the final. This disqualification not only cost her a medal but also overshadowed her impressive journey through the competition.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has voiced its support for Phogat and announced plans to explore further legal options. This response underscores the ongoing commitment to addressing the perceived injustice in Phogat’s case.

The CAS decision has left Phogat and her supporters disheartened, but the Indian Olympic Association remains determined to pursue additional legal avenues in her favor.

“Vinesh is one of India’s most respected female wrestlers. She is incredibly dedicated and hardworking. This outcome is heartbreaking for us because we deserved at least a silver. This is a clear injustice.” — Coach Virendra Dahiya.
