Kuwait has lifted its more than year-long ban on entry and work visas for Filipino nationals, reinstating opportunities for employment in the country. The announcement was made by Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior on X, highlighting the resumption of visa issuance for Filipino domestic workers with prior overseas experience.

In addition to lifting the visa ban, the meeting led to the establishment of a joint technical working committee that will meet periodically to tackle employment-related issues and other concerns.

Kuwait Reopens Doors to Filipino Workers After Year-Long Ban

Kuwait’s decision to lift the ban on work and entry visas for Filipinos signals a positive shift in labor relations between the two countries. The ban, which had been in effect since May of last year due to alleged violations of the bilateral labor agreement by the Philippines, has now been revoked. Filipino domestic workers with previous overseas experience can once again seek employment opportunities in Kuwait, a move that is expected to address the labor shortage in the country.

The announcement, made on X by Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior, came after a significant bilateral meeting held at Seif Palace. The meeting was attended by high-ranking officials, including Kuwait’s Minister of Defense, the Minister of the Interior, and the Deputy Minister of Migrant Labor of the Philippines. Led by Sheikh Fahad Yousef Saud Al-Sabah, the discussions aimed at resolving past issues and paving the way for future cooperation.

One of the key outcomes of the meeting was the agreement to establish a joint technical working committee. This committee will convene periodically to address various employment-related issues and ensure that both parties adhere to the terms of their labor agreements. The initiative reflects a mutual commitment to improving the working conditions and rights of Filipino workers in Kuwait.

The reinstatement of visas and the formation of the technical committee also emphasize the importance of the “Domestic Workers Employment Agreement” signed in 2018. This agreement serves as a framework for protecting the rights of domestic workers and ensuring fair treatment. The recent developments highlight the efforts of both governments to maintain a positive and cooperative relationship, fostering better conditions for migrant workers.

The lifting of the visa ban and the establishment of a joint technical working committee mark a significant step towards strengthening labor relations between Kuwait and the Philippines. This move benefits both nations by addressing labor needs in Kuwait and providing employment opportunities for Filipino workers, reinforcing their commitment to protecting and promoting workers’ rights.

“Labor migration is a critical issue that requires cooperation and mutual respect between countries.”

– Sheikh Fahad Yousef Saud Al-Sabah
