India and Bangladesh prepare for the first cyclone of the year

  • The first cyclone of the year is expected to hit Bangladesh and India late on Sunday.
  • In the coastal district, 78,000 volunteers have been put on standby to deal with Cyclone “Remal.”
  • In the coastal districts, some 4,000 cyclone shelter centers are prepared and have enough dry food on hand.

The first cyclone of the year is expected to hit Bangladesh and India late on Sunday, with winds of up to 120 km/h predicted. The Bangladesh meteorological office issued warnings over loudspeakers and increased the storm risk signal for two ports and nine coastal districts in the country of South Asia to the maximum level of 10.

Recent years have seen a high frequency of catastrophic storms along the low-lying coasts of South Asian neighbors; Cyclone Yaas in 2021 killed at least one person and left over 50,000 others homeless.

Cyclone Remal

According to Md. Mohibur Rahman, State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief, officials have set up cyclone centers and made the necessary preparations to deal with the scenario.

To house a large number of people, including the most vulnerable ones living in remote locations, the district government has converted social, educational, and religious institutions into improvised shelters in addition to the 4,000 approved cyclone shelters in coastal districts.

In the coastal district, 78,000 volunteers from the Cyclone Preparedness Program have been put on standby to deal with Cyclone “Remal.” In the coastal districts, some 4,000 cyclone shelter centers are prepared and have enough dry food on hand.

To encourage individuals who are at risk to relocate to safety with government representatives, 8,600 Red Crescent volunteers and others participated in a campaign. The district administration then organized transportation to take the individuals to the cyclone shelters.

Currently, Cyclone Remal is a severe cyclonic storm with a center located approximately 380 km southwest of Chattogram Port, 340 km southwest of Cox’s Bazar Port, 295 km south of Mongla Port, and 265 km south of Payra Port.
