A record-tying fourth time around, Rory McIlroy defeated Xander Schauffele by a margin of five strokes to win the Wells Fargo Championship. McIlroy has won the competition twice, this time around.

After two weeks ago in New Orleans, where he won the Zurich Classic with Shane Lowry, McIlroy finished at 17-under 267, his second consecutive PGA Tour victory. He had shot four consecutive rounds in the 60s. Given that he won his previous major championship at Valhalla Golf Club ten years ago, McIlroy ought to have a lot of momentum going into the PGA Championship in Kentucky.

Schauffele’s eagle on the par-5 eighth put him two behind McIlroy, but the world‘s second-ranked player changed gears fast. when making birdies on Nos. 8 and 9, he came even, and on the 10th, when Schauffele had settled for a birdie, he holed a 33-foot eagle putt for his first lead of the tournament. He had more breathing room after McIlroy’s bogey at 12.

After making birdie on the 13th hole and Schauffele missing another putt for par, McIlroy effectively won the victory with a four-shot lead.

To cap off an incredible run of playing eight holes in 8-under par, McIlroy was not done. He made another birdie on No. 14 and completed the victory by chipping in from the sand for another eagle on No. 15, moving to 19 under.

Reminiscent of his 2010 final-round performance, McIlroy carded six consecutive 3-pointers en route to defeating Phil Mickelson for his first career PGA Tour victory in round 62. He took home the victory in both 2015 and 2021.

Due to its ability to utilize his length off the tee, McIlroy has always regarded Quail Hollow as one of his favorite courses. It was his Sunday putt that gave him his 26th career PGA Tour victory. Making five putts longer than ten feet, he just needed twenty-five.

After finishing second for the second year in a row and seeing his winless streak extend to 39 tournaments, Schauffele’s great week came to an unsatisfactory end. Following the Mother’s Day triumph, McIlroy expressed his gratitude to his mother Rosie, who was in Florida.
