Due to intense rains, Kenya has delayed the reopening of its schools by one week; the number of flood-related deaths in the East African nation is getting close to 100.

Over 100 schools were reported to have been inundated, with some experiencing roofs that were blown off and walls that had crumbled, according to the Education Ministry.

Kenya’s flooding

Instead of reopening on Monday as planned, all schools will now open on May 6. Ninety-three people have died as a result of Kenya’s flooding, and more deaths are likely to come after a boat sank in northern Garissa County.

Twenty-three individuals have been saved from the boat by the Kenyan Red Cross, but more than a dozen are still unaccounted for. Since the middle of March, the nation has been battered by heavy rains, resulting in flooding in Burundi and Tanzania.

Nairobi has been reported to have experienced the most number of deaths in Kenya. Several flights had to be rerouted on Saturday due to flooding at Kenya’s main airport.

The flooding has impacted more than 200,000 people nationwide, submerging homes in high-risk zones and forcing some to seek shelter in schools. The National Youth Service has been directed by President William Ruto to provide space for makeshift camps for individuals impacted.
