Strong reaction to pro-Palestinian demonstrations on US campuses

  • At the college administrators, law enforcement at Emory University in Atlanta has used tear gas and Tasers against student protestors.
  • After 60 persons were brought into custody at the University of Texas, 46 of them had their charges dropped by prosecutors.
  • Authorities at the university have demanded that police clear the demonstrations, claiming that they are frequently unapproved.

Concerns concerning the use of force to quell protests have been raised by the resurgence of conflicts between students and police opposing Israel’s war in Gaza.

At the insistence of college administrators, law enforcement at Emory University in Atlanta has used tear gas and Tasers against student protestors, and at the University of Texas in Austin, officers mounted on horses and wearing riot gear have put an end to rallies.

Pro-Palestinian

After 60 persons were brought into custody at the University of Texas, 46 of them had their charges dropped by prosecutors due to “deficiencies in the probable cause affidavits.”

A Reuters count indicates that there have been approximately 550 arrests related to rallies against Gaza in the previous week at major US institutions. Authorities at the university have demanded that police clear the demonstrations, claiming that they are frequently unapproved.

FOX 5 Atlanta broadcast a video of a brawl between police and protesters, in which one cop seemed to use a stun gun to restrain a protester, while other policemen wrestled other demonstrators to the ground and led them away.
