Kevin Yeung Yun-hung, the minister of sports for Hong Kong, is optimistic that the city may medal at the next Olympics even if fewer local competitors are anticipated to make it than they did four years ago.
Yeung thinks that while inhabitants of the host city Paris may easily dine out before attending public viewings of their favorite sports in shopping centers, the six-hour time difference might prove to be a fantastic chance for the economy. Fifteen competitors from Hong Kong had qualified for the Summer Olympics in Paris as of last month, and a few more berths have been confirmed in recent days.
Hong Kong
Four years ago, a record 46 competitors competed in 38 events to qualify for the Olympics in Tokyo. The minister stated that although he was confident that athletes would win medals this year, he wouldn’t bet on whether they could equal the previous best of six from the previous Games, which featured a gold medal in fencing for Cheung Ka-long.
The most crucial thing is that, with everyone’s help, our athletes give it their throughout competition, meeting or even surpassing expectations in performance. The rights to broadcast the Games free of charge have been acquired by the government for three local free-to-air television stations (TVB, ViuTV, and Hoy TV) and state broadcaster RTHK.
Yeung stated that the government’s responsibility in supporting sports and the overall advantages to society had been considered in making the decision. The speaker went on to say that the government had obtained full broadcasting rights, which meant TV stations could now watch the Games online.
Given the difficulties faced by individuals who wanted to watch the Tokyo Olympics but were occupied with work during the one-hour delay, the time difference between Hong Kong and Paris may not be a deal breaker.
People may find it easier to watch the Games because of the present time difference because they can opt to watch after work or tune in after dinner at shopping centers.
The minister also discussed the upcoming National Games in November 2025, which Guangdong province, Macau, and Hong Kong jointly organized for the first time. Less than anticipated, eight events—four of which, including the rugby sevens, will be held at the new Kai Tak Sports Park—will be hosted by the city.
