Under the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, WhatsApp, an instant messaging service owned by Meta, has declared its intention to deactivate over 76 lakh accounts in India starting in February 2024.

Approximately 7,628,000 WhatsApp accounts were blocked between February 1 and February 29. Of those, 1,424,000 were blocked proactively, meaning that no user reports were needed.

In February, the platform had a record 16,618 complaint complaints, of which 22 were “actioned” records. Except for complaints that are judged to be duplicates of earlier tickets, WhatsApp addressed every complaint that was submitted.

1,358,000 accounts were proactively banned by the corporation before user reports, out of the 6,728,000 accounts that were banned between January 1 and January 31.

Overseeing these efforts is a group of engineers, data scientists, analysts, researchers, and specialists in online safety, law enforcement, and technological advancements that WhatsApp employs. As leaked information suggests, WhatsApp may allow foreign payments using its in-app Unified Payments Interface (UPI) service.
