After recovering from appendix surgery for two weeks, Carlos Sainz won the Australian Grand Prix, and Max Verstappen, the world champion for Red Bull, retired for the first time in his career.

Before Mercedes driver George Russell’s last-lap collision created a virtual safety car and facilitated Sainz’s triumph, he managed to hold off teammate Charles Leclerc.

Australian Grand Prix

Oscar Piastri’s attempt to secure the first podium for an Australian driver in an F1 race was thwarted by Lando Norris, who finished third for McLaren. A brake problem ended Verstappen’s nine-race winning streak on the fourth lap.

After his poorest Melbourne qualifying since 2010, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton was forced to retire early due to a power unit issue. He had started the race in 11th place on the grid.

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez came in fifth, and Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin came in seventh. Yuki Tsunoda placed eighth, followed by Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg in ninth place. With Alex Albon, who finished 11th and out of the points in his teammate Logan Sargeant’s vehicle, Williams only fielded one driver in the race.
