During the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), the BCCI plans to implement a new Smart Replay System to increase decision-making effectiveness and expedite the procedure. Eight Hawk-Eye high-speed cameras, two Hawk-Eye operators, and a TV umpire will be included in the system to provide real-time views for quick analysis.

As a result, the TV broadcast director’s function as a go-between for the operators and the third umpire is eliminated. Rather than going through a middleman, the TV umpire will receive visuals directly from the operators, giving them access to a greater variety of images, including split-screen views.

Smart Replay System

Umpires will have more clarity and a variety of perspectives thanks to the Smart Replay System when evaluating situations like caught behinds, leg-before-wicket calls, stumpings, and low catches.

To deploy this approach during the IPL, the BCCI recently arranged a two-day course for umpires, involving officials from both India and outside. The board’s efforts to use contemporary technology in cricket officiating are in line with this aim.

High-speed cameras are used by the Smart Replay System to take pictures of the hitters’ positions and the precise instant the fielder released the ball. The TV umpire receives this information, which enables more precise decision-making. The TV umpire will no longer need to send replays because the operator will directly display the images to them thanks to the Smart Replay System.
