Six Indian fishermen were detained for poaching in the waters of Sri Lanka

  • Six Indian nationals were apprehended during the operation and two Indian trawlers were seized.

During a special operation to drive Indian poaching trawlers out of Sri Lankan waters, the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) apprehended two of the vessels last night, 22.

Six Indian nationals were apprehended during the operation, which took place in Sri Lankan waters north of Jaffna’s Delft Island, and two Indian trawlers were seized.

A special operation

Considering the effects of these activities on the livelihood of local fishermen, the Navy regularly monitors and operates in Sri Lankan waters to stop illegal fishing practices by foreign fishing trawlers.

Following up on these operations, on January 22, the North Central Naval Command identified a group of Indian poaching trawlers fishing illegally in Sri Lankan waters. To combat the trawlers, the Navy and Sri Lanka Coast Guard dispatched Fast Attack Craft.

During this operation, six Indian fishermen and two Indian poaching trawlers were detained by naval officers in the island seas off Delft Island.

The six Indian fishermen who were caught and the poaching trawlers were transported to the Kankasanthurai Harbour. The Mailadi Fisheries Inspector will receive them so that legal action can be taken against them.
