A teenage refugee from Afghanistan becomes a boxing champion

After practicing at South Bristol’s Sweatbox Gym for two years, Ahsan Karimi, a teenage refugee, has achieved national championship status. After leaving Afghanistan’s capital of Kabul in 2021, Karimi and his family took up residence in Redcliffe, Bristol, close to the gym.

Co-owner of Sweatbox Gym Coach John Conway introduced himself and gave the family membership after getting to know Ahsan’s father through a friend.

A boxing champion

When Ahsan started boxing at the age of sixteen, he showed potential. Over the course of the following two years, he put a lot of effort and concentration into winning eight out of nine contests, and in October, he advanced to the National Development Championships in Cannock, Staffordshire.

He thanked his parents for their support and said he was happy to have won the 67kg National Youth Championship.

The group’s most seasoned member defeated Ahsan on their barnstorming route to the National Development Championships. Every time he went up against more seasoned boxers, he got better. There are lots of friends at the gym, and everyone is happy with Ahsan’s accomplishments.

Ahsan appreciates the help from his coach John at Sweatbox Gym. In addition to wanting to become a world champion and coach future champions, he is excited to keep working out with his pals.
