Leaders of Australia and New Zealand want stronger defense links

  • Australia and New Zealand have decided to fortify defense relations.
  • New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon paid his first visit to Australia.
  • The AUKUS deal gives Australia access to a fleet of submarines fueled by American nuclear technology.

New Zealand has decided to explore exchanging cutting-edge military technologies with the US and UK through the AUKUS alliance, therefore Australia and New Zealand have decided to fortify defense relations.

Following his formation of a coalition government in October, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon paid his first visit to Australia.

Stronger defense links

To make sure their preparations are coordinated and in line with one another, the foreign and defense ministers of the two nations will meet early in 2024.

As China’s military threat to the region grows, the AUKUS deal gives Australia access to a fleet of submarines fueled by American nuclear technology. The development and exchange of advanced military capabilities, such as hypersonics, electronic warfare, and artificial intelligence, is the focus of AUKUS Pillar 2, which New Zealand is interested in joining.

To maintain security and peace in the area, the AUKUS is a crucial component. New Zealand’s nuclear-free position is non-negotiable, and it has prohibited nuclear-powered ships from using its ports since 1984. The greater the advantage to both nations, the more the military of the two countries cooperate, especially in interoperability.
