Lok Sabha adjourns after a Trinamool MP is expelled

Mahua Moitra, a Trinamool MP, was expelled from the Indian Parliament on the advice of the Ethics Panel due to a cash-for-query controversy. Leaders of the opposition INDIA bloc questioned the panel’s process and insisted on a discussion of the report.

An Ethics Committee report investigating allegations against BJP MP Nishikant Dubey recommended Moitra be removed from the 17th Lok Sabha for acting in an unethical and criminal manner.

By a vote of 6 to 4, the panel last month approved the draft report. The investigation found that Moitra accessed her login multiple times while on four separate trips to the United Arab Emirates between 2019 and 2023.

Four panelists from opposing parties submitted dissent notes, while six members of the panel—including Congress MP Preneet Kaur—voted in favor of the report. Restoring the honor of the Constitution is what Dr. Anil Agarwal, the BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh, asked to be done with the bill.

The Lok Sabha will debate the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Bill next week, which would supersede the Indian Penal Code.The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita Bill, which aims to replace the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Post Office Bill, which aims to modernize Indian postal services, are among the other bills under consideration. Chief Minister Banerjee denounced as unfair the BJP’s politics of vendetta.

Mahua Moitra, the leader of the Trinamool Congress, was expelled from the Lok Sabha after an Ethics Committee report concluded that she had accepted bribes in exchange for her criticism of the government.

The committee faced criticism for being misused as a tool to subdue the opposition by overwhelming them and using them as a prop. Moitra took issue with the Lok Sabha’s conduct of a witch-hunt against a lone woman without political ancestry, one of the 78 MPs.

A parliamentary committee has also been weaponized, as witnessed by the Lok Sabha. After a motion to remove Moitra as TMC MP was adopted by the Lok Sabha, the opposition parties withdrew.
