On November 22, 2023, the Netherlands’ National Elections 2023 are scheduled to occur, after the 13-year resignation of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte from politics.

Because of his prolonged tenure in politics and his ability to point to “insurmountable differences” within his coalition, Rutte, also known as “Teflon Mark,” has earned the nickname.

Immigration, living standards, and the nation’s housing crisis will be the main issues during the election. Voters will have 26 political parties to select from. The voting process in the Netherlands is proportional, with the total number of votes being divided by the 150 seats.

Since it is more difficult to secure a clear majority due to the structure and number of parties, coalition governments are usually the norm. Until a new government is formed, Rutte will continue to serve as PM.

January 2022 saw the inauguration of Rutte’s fourth coalition government, which came about after the longest coalition talks in Dutch political history. His Cabinet will probably function as a caretaker government until a new one is formed, and elections for the 150-seat lower house of the Dutch parliament are anticipated later this year.

Rutte’s retirement has caused several resignations among the leaders of the ruling coalition. Rutte has refuted rumors that he might accept a position as NATO General Secretary in Brussels following the conclusion of the Dutch elections, saying a woman should be appointed to the position.
