To stop US migrants from passing through the Central American nation, El Salvador is charging travelers who are African or Indian $1,000.

Additionally, the authority stated that the funds raised will be put toward upgrading the country’s primary international airport.

Meeting with US Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Brian Nichols this week, El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele talked about “efforts to address irregular migration” among other things. In fiscal year 2023, which concluded in September, the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol recorded 3.2 million encounters with migrants nationwide.

Migrants from Africa and other affected countries are now required to pay an additional $1,130 fee to the US due to increased use of the country’s main international airport.

The fee, imposed on October 23, requires airlines to notify Salvadoran authorities daily of passengers from 57 African and Indian countries. Colombian airline Avianca has started notifying travelers that they must pay the fee before boarding flights to El Salvador.
