After an almost forty-year hiatus, high-speed passenger ferry service between Kankesanthurai in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province and Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu will resume on October 10.
The Shipping Corporation of India‘s High-Speed Craft, Cheriyapani, has been put into service. The ferry could carry 150 people, and the ticket costs between Rs 6,500 and 7,670 for each passenger. It will take three hours to get to the neighboring island’s Northern Province, Jaffna.
Passenger ferry service
The distance between Sri Lanka’s Gangesan Port and Nagai Port is 60 nautical miles, and it can be traveled there by boat in 3.30 hours, according to the authorities.
Since 6,000 liters of fuel are needed to travel from Nagapattinam to Sri Lanka, the passenger fare is set at Rs 6,500, including 18 percent GST, and each passenger is allowed to bring 40 kg of luggage for free.
The Union Government had spent Rs 3 crore dredging the Nagapattinam harbor to improve the service.
People from all walks of life have applauded the decision since it might potentially resurrect an old maritime connection between Kankesanthurai in Sri Lanka and Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu, boosting trade and religious tourism in both countries.
