Elon Musk speaks out on the issue of US immigration

  • Elon Musk went to the Texas-Mexico border to meet with local officials.
  • Musk called for a two-pronged strategy to rewrite the immigration laws in the US.
  • The South African-born Musk described himself as “extremely pro-immigrant.”

Elon Musk, a billionaire, went to the Texas-Mexico border to meet with local officials and law officers to get an “unfiltered” perspective of the problem.

The visit coincided with a surge in asylum applications as thousands of migrants traveled into northern Mexico and across the US border into Texas, Arizona, and California.

US immigration

This abrupt rise, particularly in the San Diego, California, and El Paso and Eagle Pass, Texas, border cities, comes after a previous decline in unauthorized border crossings following the implementation of a new asylum policy by Democratic President Joe Biden‘s administration to deter such conduct.

As part of a significantly expanded legal immigration system, Musk recommended a two-pronged strategy to alter US immigration laws: faster legal approval for hard-working and honorable migrants, and denial of access to those breaking the law.

His goal was to limit an enormous population movement that was undermining social services and to facilitate legitimate immigration. The South African-born Musk identified himself as an “immigrant to the United States” and described himself as “extremely pro-immigrant.”

His involvement in American politics has increased; in May, he hosted Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ Republican presidential campaign on Twitter, turned down a request from the Ukrainian government to use his Starlink satellite network to support that nation’s defense against Russia, and met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss how to balance defending free speech and combating hate speech on X.
