The Sunday Times reported that the individual was a researcher in the British parliament who was believed to be working for China when UK police announced Saturday that they had arrested him for spying.

According to the Metropolitan Police Service, two individuals were detained on March 13 on suspicion of violating the Official Secrets Act of 1911’s Section 1.

A man in his 20s and 30s who was employed as a parliamentary researcher in the UK was detained on suspicion of collaborating with Conservative Party lawmakers.

A British national with experience in foreign policy, the suspect is connected to Conservative Party lawmakers. The episode, which may be among the most major security lapses at the UK parliament, is a noteworthy development in light of earlier MI5 advisories on political meddling by the Chinese Communist Party.

China was “prolifically and aggressively” pursuing the UK, according to the Commons Intelligence and Security Committee, and the government lacked the tools, know-how, or resources to counter it. Tom Tugendhat, the security minister, had only sporadic conversations with the suspect.
