Donald Trump will skip the primary GOP debates

  • The debate is set on August 23 at 9 p.m. Eastern time.
  • GOP primary debates put further pressure on opponents to change their campaign approaches.

Donald Trump has declared that he will not participate in the Republican presidential primary debates, citing a recent poll that indicated he has a significant lead over his competitors.

This declaration put an end to weeks of rumors that he wouldn’t participate in the party’s first presidential debate in Milwaukee. Trump’s announcement suggests that he is already focusing on a potential general election contest with Vice President Joe Biden.

DeSantis vs Vivek Ramaswamy

Trump cited a study conducted by CBS News that was released on Sunday, claiming that it “has me leading the field by ‘legendary’ numbers.”

He praised his presidential accomplishments and mocked his rivals, especially Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, for trailing in the polls before adding in all caps that he “will therefore not be doing the debates!” The debate is set on August 23 at 9 p.m. Eastern time, but Trump didn’t specify in his Truth Social post what he would be doing at that time.

It would be disrespectful to the network, which is hosting the discussion on Wednesday, to have an interview with former Fox News star Tucker Carlson during the event, even if a representative claimed on Friday that preparations hadn’t been finalized.

The network has recently come under fire from Trump for how it has covered his campaign. While Trump won’t participate in the debate on Wednesday, he plans to have supporters there in Milwaukee.

His decision to skip the GOP primary debates puts further pressure on his opponents to change their campaign approaches. Chris Christie, a former governor of New Jersey, has made attacking Trump the cornerstone of his campaign for president and has been looking forward to the debate.
