The Matildas of Australia, the first Australian football team to compete in a World Cup semifinal, lost 3-1 to England in the Women’s World Cup semifinal.

Over 75,000 spectators watched the game in Sydney’s Stadium Australia, and millions more were expected to tune in from other parts of the nation.

Women’s World Cup

Sam Kerr, who had started the previous two games from the bench due to injury, made his way back to the starting lineup for the first time in the tournament.

Australia selected the same lineup as in its previous game. Over 75,000 spectators watched the game at Sydney’s Stadium Australia, and Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson insisted that his squad was not under any extra strain because they were the hosts.

The Matildas have advanced deeper in a football World Cup than any other Australian team, male or female. The Socceroos finally qualified for the World Cup in 2006 after a 32-year absence, reaching the Round of 16 that year and repeating that feat in 2022.

Australia will compete against Sweden in the final in Brisbane during the third-place matchup. While they wait to see whether captain Sam Kerr will start on the pitch or start on the bench this morning, fans can catch a look at the team as they stroll through the city.
