  • Opposition protests over delimitation and education policy, leading to Rajya Sabha walkout.
  • Manipur’s budget and President’s Rule proclamation set to be presented.
  • Ganga water deemed fit for bathing during Maha Kumbh, government informs Parliament.

As the second part of the Budget Session 2025 resumed, political tensions flared in both Houses. The Opposition walked out of Rajya Sabha, citing dissatisfaction over discussions on delimitation and the National Education Policy.

On the legislative front, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced the New Income Tax Bill, 2025, aiming to simplify tax laws and modernize financial definitions.

Budget Session 2025: Tensions Rise Over Key Legislative Reforms

The session saw a heated exchange between the ruling party and opposition leaders over procedural matters, particularly notices filed under Rule 267. BJP leader J.P. Nadda criticized opposition parties for allegedly attempting to disrupt proceedings rather than engaging in meaningful debate. Meanwhile, AIADMK MPs voiced concerns over delimitation, warning against a reduction in representation for southern states.

The government’s decision to introduce the New Income Tax Bill, 2025, has drawn attention for its proposed overhaul of existing tax structures. One of the key changes includes replacing the financial and assessment year system with a simplified “tax year.” This move, along with new definitions for digital assets and electronic transactions, is expected to impact businesses and individuals alike.

In Rajya Sabha, Amit Shah is set to formally submit documents related to the President’s Rule in Manipur. The announcement has sparked criticism from opposition leaders, who demand a detailed explanation of the government‘s handling of the state’s crisis. Additionally, discussions on the Bills of Lading Bill, 2024, were introduced to facilitate smoother trade and transfer of ownership rights.

A significant revelation came when the Centre presented a CPCB report declaring that the Ganga River at Prayagraj was fit for bathing during the Maha Kumbh. However, earlier reports had indicated high faecal coliform levels, leading to debates on the accuracy and transparency of water quality assessments.

The Budget Session 2025 continues to be marked by high-stakes debates, with the Opposition raising concerns over governance and electoral processes. As crucial bills and policies are discussed, parliamentary tensions remain high, setting the stage for further confrontations.
